Last meeting for the 2015-2016 School Year

Posted on May 18, 2016 at 10:15 PM Comments comments (0)

Our last meeting tonight was bittersweet for me.  I knew the year was coming to an end, and we need to begin planning for the new school year.  We celebrated by making tie dye shirts, eating pizza, and playing bingo.  The girls went home with lots of prizes!  On top of that, they received their new Girl Talk shirts.  Same design, but added a saying at the bottom-Free2Bme!  That's what we talked about all year.  Being themselves.

Relationships

When girls describe "the perfect girl," they typically say she has "a perfect relationship." This assumption creates undue pressure on girls to be in a romantic relationship, even though they may not really want one. Join us tonight from 6pm-7:30pm as we tackle this topic tonight! We will meet at the Moore Activity Center, 304 Linden Avenue, Covington, KY 41011. Girls in grades 6-12 are welcome!

Bullying

Gossiping, spreading rumors, excluding others, backstabbing, using put-downs, and exposing secrets are all forms of aggression that girls use to hurt and manipulate each other. By developing new social skills, girls are better able to empathize with others and consider the impact their actions have on others. Social skills that are not focused on self, rather than on the needs of others, help make our society and world a more peaceful, enjoyable, accepting place.

Join us tonight as Ms. Dawn leads the discussion to help girls think about everyday situations from another person's point of view.

We will meet at the Moore Activity Center, 304 Linden Avenue, Covington, KY from 6:00pm-7:30pm. Girls in grades 6-12 are welcome!

1st Girl Talk Retreat

If it wasn't for donors who believe in what we do, this trip would not have been possible.  I had a great time with these girls.  We had a beautiful cabin to stay in, and kept busy with lots of crafts and activities.  Each girl went home with their purse they made from bandanas, a pair of gym shoes they decorated, the first letter of their name that they decorated, a candle jar they made, a journal and a book called "The Drama Years."  It was a blessing to be able to get these girls out of their comfort zone into something that is fresh and new.  Hopefully this is just the beginning of many more Girl Talk Retreats.

Giving Back

As we inch closer to our first retreat, we can't help but thank all of you who helped make this possible. Through you generosity, your donations covered the expenses for transportation, housing, and meals for trip! Since the girls don't have to give any money towards the trip, we felt it was important that they give of themselves by volunteering. Some volunteered this weekend helping with an Easter Party. The remainder will volunteer tonight with a project for the Moore Activity Center. We want to convey the message to the girls that we all have to work towards what we want. If you can't donate financially, you can always donate your time.

The girls did an excellent job on the giving back project tonight. They attached fliers to 205 boxes of candy. It was awesome to see them working together. I'm so proud of them! Good job girls!

Thank You Tashia!

We had a great time with photographer Tashia Harris last night! She gave the girls some pointers prior to the photo shoot and the girls did fantastic! Thank you again for coming!
